The Heart Behind The Mission

Rooted in Service, Rising in Impact: My Journey to Empower Communities

By Femi Olutoye

My story is one of service, sacrifice, and an unwavering belief in the power of community. During the COVID-19 pandemic, while pursuing my PhD at Southern Medical University in China, I felt increasingly unsettledโ€”sitting in a classroom, reading daily reports of thousands of lives lost. I knew I could no longer remain a bystander in the face of such suffering. I made the difficult but necessary decision to pause my academic journey and dedicate myself fully to serving others.

On campus, I led volunteer wellness initiatives, conducted hospital outreach, and educated international students and stranded travelers about safety, health, and well-being. These efforts were recognized by the university, but more importantly, they laid the foundation for my enduring commitment to public health.

Driven by this passion, I pursued nursing registration in New Zealandโ€”a country known for its inclusive healthcare system and pioneering role in nurse legislation. In 2021, I began my international nursing journey, gaining firsthand experience in a healthcare system committed to excellence and equity.

But my journey didnโ€™t end there. I later moved to Canada to gain deeper expertise and expand my global perspective on healthcare delivery. Yet, throughout these international experiences, my desire to give back to my grassroots community in Nigeria remained unquenched. Through the Femi Olutoye Foundation, I have continued to drive impactful health and education programs across underserved communities in my home country.

Fortunately, my advocacy efforts and dedication to community service did not go unnoticed. In 2025, I was awarded the prestigious King Charles III Coronation Medal for Community Service by the Canadian Nurses Associationโ€”an honor that reflects a lifelong commitment to compassion, equity, and leadership.

My leadership is grounded in empathy, shaped by lived experience, and fueled by a vision of a world where everyone has the opportunity to live a healthy, empowered life.

This is my story. This is our mission. Together, we transform communities.
